Yates enjoyed an excellent campaign for Cheltenham Town in the centre of midfield in 2000-01, winning much praise for his hard work and consistent displays. Partnering Lee Howells in the centre of the park his ball-winning skills were to the fore and he also contributed six valuable goals.
He was deservedly awarded the title of 'Player of the Season' at Whaddon Road at the end of the campaign. In his younger days, Yates was a ball boy at West Bromwich Albion.
Yates's contract at Cheltenham Town was cancelled in February 2004 and he immediately returned to Kidderminster Harriers with a contract to the end of the season when he joined the coaching staff at Burnley.
