Walters was bought for Liverpool after having been a great success under Souness at Rangers, but failed to perform to the standards he had earlier set himself.
Walters experienced a somewhat frustrating season with Bristol Rovers in 2000-01 when he made many of his appearances from the subs' bench. One of several players transfer listed by the Pirates in January he was then appointed temporary boss of the reserve team after Garry Thompson became care-taker- manager. Despite the disappointment of Rovers' relegation he finished the campaign on a personal high, netting two goals in the final day victory over Wrexham. Although now entering the twilight of his career Walters is still one of the most talented wide attacking players in the lower divisions and providing he remains fit he looks to have plenty more football left in him.
