Troubled for long periods of 2000-01 by unrelated calf injuries, it was during his absences that Mark's value to the Everton team was most missed.
A dogged and fiercely competitive midfielder, his qualities are enthusiasm, a willingness to work and a refusal to admit defeat.
Walter Smith paid him a huge compliment when he said that of all the players the Toffees had missed during an injury-stricken start to the season, Mark's loss had been the most significant.
Typically he shrugged off the praise, got his head down and carried on doing what he does best . . . working hard.
Mark's contract at Fulham was extended to June 2006 in May 2005, then to June 2007 in May 2006.
