Patterson suffered from injuries that prevented him enjoying a lengthy run in the Gillingham first team, but after returning to the line-up at the beginning of March he retained his place for the rest of the season.
Despite being right-footed he appeared in an uncustomary position of left back, but always gave 100 per cent and never let the side down.
Patterson signed a new contract in October 2000 that tied him to the Gills until 2003.
