Following his release by Wolves Mark joined Chesterfield in the 2000 close season but took a long time to reach full match fitness, due in part to a lack of reserve games to bring him on. A quick-witted and pacy striker, he scored on his only start for the Spireites in the LDV Vans Trophy game at Rotherham, but moved on to Raith Rovers in the new year. He netted on his debut for the Scottish First Division outfit and settled in well, hitting four goals in eight appearances.
