Cartwright has made some 66 appearances between the posts for his various clubs. Cartwright joined Brighton on trial during the summer of 2000 and completed a permanent move at the end of August. He made his debut on the opening day of the season when he replaced Michel Kuipers for the second half of the 2-0 defeat at Southend and retained his place in the Seagulls line-up until early October when Kuipers returned to the team. He had to wait until February before he had another brief run in the side and when he returned he went on to create a club record of six consecutive clean sheets, albeit separated by a period of several months. Cartwright is a reliable keeper who is not afraid to put himself in painful situations when defending his goal. He was reported to have been released in May and was soon snapped up by Shrewsbury.

Cartwright decided to coach in the USA after being released by the Shrews in the 2002 close season before returning to Gay Meadow in January 2003.
