Burchill got off to an explosive start at Celtic in 2000-01 netting a hat-trick within four minutes in the 7-0 thrashing of Luxembourg's Jeunesse Esch in a UEFA Cup qualifying round tie.

However, he failed to win a regular place in Martin O'Neill's team and was soon on his way to Birmingham City in a loan deal.

He did well at St Andrews netting five goals from seven starts and becoming a huge crowd favourite to the extent that the fans raised a petition to pressure the club into signing him permanently.

However, the transfer eventually fell through and, in February, he joined Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the season, primarily as cover for Marcus Stewart.

He made his debut in the home game with Everton and created a tremendous impression being denied a penalty as early as the seventh minute.

He also had a shot blocked and a flying header saved before he turned provider with his crosses from the left wing creating goals for Matt Holland and Alun Armstrong.

He scored in the following game against Bradford City when he got the slightest touch on Hermann Hreidarsson's goal-bound header but, although he made further substitute appearances, he never featured again in the starting line-up and returned to Celtic Park once the season had ended.

He is an effective striker blessed with blinding pace, the ability to kick with either foot, the knack of being in the right place at the right time and great movement off the ball.

Burchill joined Rotherham United in July 2008 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in July 2009.
