Materazzi started at junior clubs Marsala and Trapani before signing for Serie B side Perugia.
He could not break into the first team and went to Carpi.
His performances earned him a return to Perugia in the middle of the 1996-97 season.
Materazzi had a great season in 1997-98 and earned himself a move to Everton for £2.8million.
He failed to settle and moved back to Perugia after only one season.
After two seasons, he made a dream move to Inter Milan after turning down Juventus and Bayern Munich for £6million in the summer of 2001.
He made his international debut in April 2001 against South Africa.
Materazzi scored Italy's opening goal in a 2-0 win against Czech Republic to finish top of Group E in the 2006 World Cup finals.
He also scored Italy's goal in the 1-1 draw with France as Italy went on to win the World Cup Final on penalties.
