McVean was a member of Liverpool's team in its first ever game - in the Lancashire League against Higher Walton (an 8-0 win). He also scored Liverpool's first league goal - against Middlesbrough Ironopolis in 1893. With Liverpool he won the 2nd Division Championship in 1894 and 1896.
