Hedman began his career in the Swedish league with AIK Solna in 1990.

He played at youth level and under 21 level for Sweden before replacing the legend Thomas Ravelli in goal making his international debut in February 1997 against Romania.

His solid performances at AIK Solna bought him to the notice of Coventry City for whom he signed in July 1997 for £ 500,000.

He made the goalkeeping position his own with his performances earning him rave reviews.

The expected move to a bigger club did not materialize and he remained in a struggling City side playing well and maintaining the number one spot for Sweden.

He had a frustrating time at Coventry in 2000-01, for having been first-choice 'keeper at the start of the campaign, he was affected by a series of injuries, then lost his place to his young rival Chris Kirkland and to cap it all the Sky Blues were relegated to the First Division.

He injured a knee playing for Sweden and was then sidelined by ankle trouble just before Christmas, then featured only briefly on his return before losing his place.

He looked set to move but Kirkland secured the big money move to Liverpool and Hedman remained first choice at Coventry.

His shot-stopping skills are as brilliant as ever became less reluctant than previous to stay on his line at corners.

Marcus came out of retirement in November 2006 to join Chelsea with a contract to the end of the season.
