With Leeds United ravaged by injuries at the start of the 2000-01 campaign, 'The Chief' found himself playing in midfield as well as in his customary central defensive role. Howeve,r he suffered a serious injury in the closing minutes of the Champions' League defeat at Barcelona when he collided with Michael Duberry.
Although soon back in action, he was carried off again after a clash of heads with Les Ferdinand and the injury kept him out for a run of seven matches.
On his return, he shackled Chelsea's Jimmy Hasselbaink, producing a 'Man of the Match' performance in the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
As skipper, he remained a key figure in the side, and enjoyed some marvellous nights in Europe. Unfortunately just as he began to form a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand, he suffered a bad knee injury at Sunderland in March, which required an operation and kept him out for the rest of the season and all of the 2001-02 season.
A very skilful defender, Lucas makes many last-ditch interceptions and is also a first class man-marker.
He played in the World Cup finals despite not being match fit, and scored in the 3-2 defeat by Spain.
Lucas, who previously played for ICL Birds, was brought up in Diepkloof Zone Four, a tough area of Soweto, as one of 11 children.
In his youth, Lucas was witness to many violent incidents and saw people shot to death. He was shot in the leg in 1991.
