In need of a specialist right-sided wing back following a succession of heavy defeats, Derby County boss Jim Smith signed Lilian on a short-term contract after a successful trial period. He showed confidence and composure on his debut against West Ham at the beginning of November, displaying both pace and precision in his delivery of the ball. However despite a bright start at Pride Park, a change of tactical formation saw him lose his place to Rory Delap at the end of the year and he had to content himself with a place on the subs' bench for the remainder of the season. He was released by the Rams in the summer.
