Len Shackleton

Date of birth03 May 1922
Place of birthBradford
NationalityEnglish
PositionInside forward

With the out-going personality of an utter showman, Len's autobiography was appropriately entitled 'The Clown Prince of Soccer'. Typically, he caused an absolute sensation on his Newcastle debut by scoring six goals in a 13-0 win against Newport County. It wasn't too long before his relationship with the Gallowgate management became strained, and another sensation wasn't far away. After only 16 months on Tyneside, he joined Sunderland for a club record £20,050.
