Although still learning the game, Lee made tremendous progress at Norwich City in 2000-01, attracting many admirers including his former England Under-21 boss, Peter Taylor. A strong-running midfielder who can also play at full back or in central defence, he loves nothing more than getting forward into goal-scoring positions. With his contract at Carrow Road due to expire in June 2001, his move to Leicester City on transfer deadline day did not come as a surprise to many. Intended as a purchase for the future, the Foxes' spring-time injury crisis meant that he was thrown in at the deep end, making his debut at Charlton Athletic. He coped adequately in fairly difficult circumstances.
Lee was made available for transfer by West Bromwich Albion in September 2003. He was forced to retire in April 2005 due to a serious leg injury.
