Maddison linked up with his old boss Ian Atkins again last October when he joined Carlisle United on loan and impressed sufficiently to earn a permanent move shortly afterwards. He went on to become a near ever-present at left wing back for the Cumbrians in their remaining matches. He provided a solid presence on the left-hand side of the defence and produced some effective forays down the flank to assist the attack. Maddison was placed on Carlisle's transfer list in September 2001.
