Howells was a regular choice with Mark Yates in the centre of midfield for Cheltenham Town in 2000-01. Having played for the club since their Dr Martens League days he is one of the more experienced heads at Whaddon Road but his form seemed to dip at times and he had some disciplinary problems which he needs to avoid in the future. He is a hard-running and effective midfield player who is strong in the tackle.
