Crooks was very much on the fringes of the Manchester City first-team squad in 2000-01 and, although he made the starting line-up for both legs of the Worthington Cup tie against Gillingham, he made just two appearances from the subs' bench in Premiership matches.
In December, he joined Second Division Northampton Town on loan where he looked very useful in a defensive midfield role.
Unfortunately he injured an ankle in his second game for the Sixfields club and was injured again on his return.
He was subsequently sold to Barnsley in March but had a knee injury when he joined the club and this was aggravated as he tried to start to regain fitness.
He subsequently underwent surgery in mid-April.
A versatile defender who is best used either as a centre half or right back, he makes effective forward runs and has a powerful long-range shot.
Crooks, who is a former England youth international, joined Rochdale in August 2006 with a one-year contract.
