Ashcroft joined Wigan Athletic at the start of the 2000-01 campaign as a replacement for Stuart Barlow but he had a frustrating time with injuries and found it difficult to establish a regular place in the line-up. A quick forward who likes to run at defenders, he is able to play on either flank, as an out-and- out striker or in a position just behind the front two. He netted his first goals for the Latics with a double in the 2-2 draw at Brentford in December.

Ashcroft's contract at Wigan was cancelled by mutual consent in February 2003. He joined Southport as player / coach.
