Full name is: Bissan Etame-Mayer Lauren.
A forceful defender, Lauren joined Arsenal shortly after being named Player of the Tournament when Cameroon won the African Nations Cup in 2000.
After helping Cameroon to victory in the African Nations Cup, Lauren was named 'Player of the Tournament', and subsequently joined Arsenal.
He then went on to star for his country in the Sydney Olympics, scoring one of the goals in the penalty shoot-out that saw the team win their country's first-ever gold medals by defeating Spain in the final.
Finally, he was named as runner-up in the 'African Footballer of the Year' award.
He also scored on his first start for Arsenal in the Premiership, and has on to feature regularly for the Gunners in their 2001-02 Double success.
Lauren is a skilful, resilient player equally comfortable in the centre or on the right of midfield.
Also employed at right back, he is a tough tackler with the creative ability to start attacking moves.
Although born in Cameroon, he moved with his family to Spain when he was a three-year old.
He therefore qualified to play for Spain, but chose Cameroon just before the 1998 World Cup finals and made a brief substitute appearance in France '98.
He began his career with Seville, playing for their B team in the Spanish Third Division.
Lauren moved up to the Second Division with Levante before progressing to the Primera Liga with Real Mallorca in 1998.
Arsenal secured his signature in a £7.2million deal and his Gunners contract was extended to June 2007 in January 2005.
Lauren joined Portsmouth in January 2007 with a contract to June 2009.
