Raised in Paris, he began his career at Red Star in France before signing for Belgian club Liege at the start of the 1994 season.
After a series of good performances, Khalilou was at one time considered as a possibility for the Belgian squad before opting to appear for the country of his birth.
After a long spell at Liege, a loan spell at Lommell and four seasons at Club Bruges, he signed for French club Auxerre in the early stages of the 2000-01 season.
He played in all four of Senegal's games in the 2000 African Nations' Cup finals and was a regular in the campaign to qualify for the World Cup finals, netting a single goal in the 5-0 victory over Namibia that secured the Lions a place in the finals for the first time.
He was an integral part of the team and very dangerous from set plays.
Shortly before the 2002 World Cup finals started, Khalilou was accused - and later cleared - of stealing a gold necklace from a jewellery shop in Daegu.
Khalilou converted the contoversial penalty to open the scoring in the 3-3 draw with Uruguay that secured Senegal's qualification for the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup finals.
Khalilou joined Bolton Wanderers in September 2004 with a one-year contract.
He joined Coventry City in February 2007 with a contract to the end of the season.
