Wills was on the fringe of Plymouth's first-team squad for the first half of the 2000-01 season but it was not until the LDV Vans Trophy tie against Bristol City in December that he made the starting line-up. He later had a short run in the team and scored his first goal in senior football when he netted with a right-foot shot in the 3-1 victory over local rivals Torquay in April. He is a central midfield player who is strong in the tackle and likes to get forward into goal-scoring positions.
After a loan spell, Wills joined Torquay United in December 2002 with a contract up to the end of the season. He then extended his stay at Plainmoor for another year.
