Nicholls received few opportunities at first-team level for Wigan Athletic in 2000-01 until the appointment of Steve Bruce as manager in April.
He was then restored to the side and went on to produce some fine performances for the Latics, scoring his first goal for the club in the Play-Off Semi-Final second leg against Reading.
He is a combative midfielder who is comfortable on the ball and has fine vision.
Nicholls's contract at Luton Town was extended to June 2007 in March 2005.
He joined Leeds United in July 2006 with a four-year contract.
Nicholls returned to Luton Town in August 2008 with a three-year contract.
