Maher had a fantastic season for Southend United in 2000-01 when he was an inspiration to the side throughout the campaign.
Operating in a central midfield role his passing and tackling were inspired and he always worked hard for the team.
Although he only contributed a couple of goals he set up numerous opportunities for his colleagues.
Maher deservedly won the club's 'Player of the Year' award at the end of the season.
Maher signed a new two-year contract at Southend United in June 2004 that was extended to June 2008 in June 2006.
He joined Oldham Athletic in July 2008 with a one-year contract.
Maher joined Gillingham in July 2009 in a two-year deal.
