Some impressive form in Sunderland's reserve and youth teams earned Kevin his first Under-21 cap for Scotland against Latvia in September 2000 and he subsequently spent much of the remainder of the campaign out on loan as he gained valuable first-team experience to prepare him for Premiership football.

He firstly joined Huddersfield Town where he made his Football League debut as a substitute against Bolton Wanderers.

Then it was on to Darlington at the beginning of November where he scored twice and showed neat footwork as well as tremendous aerial strength.

He returned to Wearside after suffering an injury in the FA Cup replay at Luton Town but then went out again to Rochdale in January where he made his debut in the televised game against Leyton Orient.

He made a big impression on his first start against Cardiff City, but returned to the Stadium of Light after a month and went on make a handful of appearances from the subs' bench in the closing weeks of the season.

A tall and skilful striker, his physical style and aerial power suggested he was a potential long-term successor to Niall Quinn.

He won a total of two caps for Scotland at Under-21 level in 2000-01.

Kevin joined Coventry City in August 2006 with a three-year contract.
