James spent four years at Charlton Athletic without making their first team and, after being released in the 1999-2000 close season, he linked up with Canvey Island for whom he impressed in a pre-season friendly against Gillingham.
A successful trial period followed and he then signed a 12-month contract for the Gills.
A tricky right winger, he made just a handful of appearances for the first team, mostly from the subs' bench but was a regular in the club's reserve team throughout the 2000-01 season.
James's contract at Gillingham was cancelled by mutual consent in April 2004.
He soon joined Nottingham Forest on a three-year contract but he was made available for transfer in May 2005.
