Harper began his career in Scotland signing for Hibernian from Hutchinson Vale Boys Club in August 1992.
He represented Scotland at schoolboy, Under 21 and B level but left his homeland after six years at Hibernian when he moved to Derby County in September 1998 for £300,000.
His versatility saw him employed mainly from the bench in his first season, and he scored on his first team debut an Anfield in 1998.
He failed to hold down a regular first team spot in the 1999-2000 season and, after a brief and successful loan spell at Walsall, he was snapped up by Portsmouth in March 2000 for £300,000.
After some impressive performances there were high expectations of this pacy winger at Fratton Park for the 2000-01 season, but unfortunately he was dogged by a persistent shin splint problem that restricted him to little more than a dozen starts.
He became a regular in the 2001-02 campaign where he converted from an out and out winger to an impressive performer at wing back.
Harper joined Stoke City in February 2005 with a contract to June 2007.
