Gray joined Stockport County in a loan deal on the eve of the 2000-01 season and was a surprise inclusion in the line-up for the opening game at Gillingham.
However, he was on his way back to the McAlpine Stadium within a matter of days after suffering injury and illness during his first game for County.
Once back, he had to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench, and it was not until late October that he regained a regular place in the first team.
A committed defender with a no-nonsense approach, he was always in the thick of the action and looked most comfortable when playing alongside Jon Dyson in the heart of the back line.
Despite them being adrift at the bottom of the Football League, Gray signed for Carlisle United in November 2003.
His contract was extended to June 2007 in May 2006.
Gray joined Chesterfield in July 2007 with a one-year contract.
