Preston's assistant manager was forced to sit on the bench as emergency cover for six games in September after an injury to first choice Teuvo Moilanen, and this led to him playing his first senior game for three-and-a half years when he came on to replace the injured David Lucas for the final seven minutes of the game against Stockport. He was mightily relieved when his only contribution was to take three goal kicks! Coincidentally, his last game for Preston had also been a home match against the same opponents back in 1997.
Kelham parted company with Preston North End in June 2003 and was soon installed as assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers.
