Hill started the 2000-01 season in excellent form in central defence for Rochdale, but lost his place through injury.
He then had to bide his time as the partnership between Dave Bayliss and Mark Monington proved equally successful.
Dale manager Steve Parkin elected to change his centre half partnership only if one became unavailable through injury or suspension.
Hill regained his place for two short spells only to have to drop out again through injury or suspension.
He is a commanding centre half known for his consistent performances.
He joined Cheltenham Town in the 2001 close season but his Whaddon Road contract was cancelled by mutual consent in July 2002 with two years to run.
Hill later became the manager at Rochdale and Barnsley.
