Macho arrived at Sunderland from First Vienna in the 2000 close season and did not take long to make an impression. When Thomas Sorensen failed appear for the second half of the season's opening game against Arsenal, he was pitched straight into action and showed his mettle in impressive fashion, making brilliant stops from Thierry Henry and Robert Pires to preserve the Wearsiders' one-goal lead.

With Sorensen sidelined, he remained between the posts for the following four games and although heavy defeats at both Manchester clubs were a rude awakening for him, he made important saves in both matches to save the team from further punishment.

Macho is an imposing 'keeper who is lightning-quick off his line and he made a second match-winning appearance as a substitute against Manchester United in the Worthington Cup, when an incredible reflex save from a David Healy header in extra time helped the Black Cats to a 2-1 win.

Macho was made available for transfer by Chelsea in July 2004.
