Darby joined Carlisle United as a player-coach under boss Ian Atkins shortly before the start of the 2000-01 campaign and featured regularly in the first half of the season either in defence or in a midfield role. A vastly experienced player he concentrated on his coaching duties after Christmas as the Cumbrian side successfully fought to avoid dropping down to the Conference. He scored just one goal during the campaign coming when he joined the attack in the closing stages of the home game with Scunthorpe in October.
