Full name is: Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida.
Nicknamed The Tank, Jorge Costa is a vastly experienced central defender who is strong in the tackle and an effective man-marker. His early career was spent with Funchal and Maritimo prior to joining FC Porto in 1992. A key figure in the team that won five successive domestic titles between 1994 and 1999, he moved to the Premiership to play for Charlton on loan during the 2001-2002 season and made an immediate impact as a very polished performer. At international level he starred at the 1991 World Youth Championships and quickly made his full international debut in November 1992 against Bulgaria but competition from Fernando Couto, Helder and Paulo Madiera restricted his appearances. He re-established himself in the run up to the 2000 European Championship Finals and he has been a regular partner of Fernando Couto ever since. A tough nut that makes up for in commitment what he lacks in technique he will start here.
