JJ missed the first few games of 2000-01 through injury but once fit became a favourite of the Charlton Athletic supporters after scoring against Southampton in his second match for the club. The goals came fairly regularly in the first half of the campaign and he scored in four consecutive games in September, but the supply began to dry up after Christmas.

Nevertheless he still finished up as the Addicks' leading scorer. He linked up well with both Matt Svensson and Shaun Bartlett in a central striking role and used his pace and ability to turn defenders and set up goals for his colleagues.

A regular choice for his country, Jonatan appeared in both World Cup qualifying ties against England.
