O'Connor is a young central defender who was released by Sheffield United in the summer of 2000 and later joined Blackpool after trials with a number of clubs including Lincoln. He was a regular in the Tangerines' line-up last autumn, appearing in ten consecutive games before being dropped following the FA Cup defeat at Yeovil. He only featured occasionally in the first team in the second half of the campaign and went on the Bloomfield Road transfer list in September 2001.
