Macken carried on where he had left off the previous season at Preston North End in 2000-01, finishing as leading scorer again, even though he was now playing at a higher level.

He got off to a cracking start at Grimsby Town in the opening game when a run from the halfway line saw him beat three defenders and finish with a cracking shot, and followed this with his first senior hat-trick in the Worthington Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town.

Groin and hamstring strains meant he missed several games in September, but further highlights included his 50th goal for North End against Barnsley and scoring after only 19 seconds in the return game against Grimsby Town.

Strong on the ball, with a quick turn and a fine footballing brain, Macken benefited from playing with the likes of Brian McBride and David Healy.

Macken joined Crystal Palace in June 2005 with a four-year contract.

He joined Derby County in January 2007 with a contract to June 2008.

Macken joined Barnsley in January 2008 with a contract in June 2009.

He joined Walsall in August 2010 with a one-year contract.
