Previously associated with Rangers, John became Carlisle United's youngest-ever player when he made his debut at Scunthorpe United on 16 March 2002. At 16 years 166 days, the Scottish striker beat the previous club record (16 years 306 days) set by Rory Delap in May 1993.
John was one of nine players placed on the Brunton Park transfer list in November 2003 before his contract was cancelled in March 2004.
