Although in the twilight of his playing career John continued to be an influential figure in the centre of the park for Oldham Athletic in 2000-01. Despite being struck down by injury early on, he fought his way back into the Latics' team and featured in more than half their Second Division games during the campaign. He is still a quality play maker and one of the best passers of the ball in the division.

John, who is the older brother of Darren Sheridan, announced his retirement due to a knee injury in April 2003. He remained on the coaching staff at Boundary Park though and subsequently re-registered as a player for the 2003-04 season. After Iain Dowie resigned to take over at Crystal Palace in December 2003, along with David Eyres, John became caretaker manager at Oldham Athletic.
