England international John Scales was a strong and versatile defender. With Liverpool he was a League Cup winner in 1995 and FA Cup runner-up in 1996 before being released to join Tottenham.
Having been released by Tottenham at the end of the 1999-2000 season John joined Ipswich Town during the summer. He began brightly, making his debut at Leicester at the beginning of September but he was constantly dogged by injuries and made only three more first-team appearances at Portman Road. He finally left the club by mutual consent in April announcing that he intended to gain coaching qualifications and also concentrate on his business interests. A strong and versatile defender he played in over 400 Football League and Premiership games.
