Salako was used mainly as a substitute by Charlton Athletic in 2000-01 and started just six first-team games. His only goal proved of vital importance as it was the late equaliser that earned the Addicks an FA Cup replay against Conference outfit Dagenham & Redbridge, thus preventing a major upset. A vastly experienced player, Salako showed glimpses of the form that earned him five England caps in the early '90's but although he often looked impressive when coming off the bench he seemed unable to sustain his performance for a full 90 minutes. Not as quick as he once was, Salako is still an excellent crosser of the ball and is especially effective with free kicks and corners.
Salako joined Brentford in July 2004 with a one-year contract.
