A down-to-earth Yorkshireman, John's honest toil was the attacking bedrock of Arsenal's 1970-71 double success. Brave, aggressive and never giving less than 100% effort were only a few of the big centre-forwards qualities though. A graduate of former manager Billy Wright's youth strategy, strong in the air, John's understanding of the game meant he had the uncanny ability to time his runs to perfection. He netted 149 goals in 481 Gunners games before joining West Ham United in 1976.
