After being released by Bournemouth at the end of the 1999-2000 campaign, John had a trial with Carlisle United over the summer before returning to Dean Court on non-contract forms in October. He made three appearances from the subs' bench for the Cherries and then moved on to join Ross County on a short-term contract later that month.

He subsequently signed for Queen of the South in January where he had a successful spell, scoring ten goals in 17 games. John is a versatile player who can appear in any of the midfield roles and also as a striker.
