Although not featuring regularly in the starting line-up for West Ham in 2000-01 John was still a very valuable member of the squad and was often used as a substitute to come on and liven things up. He produced a great display in the vital match with Derby in April, when his all-round enthusiasm helped the Hammers to a 3-1 victory. A hard-working midfield player with good passing skills.
Following his release by West Ham United, John announced his retirement in September 2003.
