Having developed with Aston Villa's reserve team, John stepped up to make his Premiership debut when he replaced David Ginola for the second half of the home defeat by Liverpool in January 2001 and also featured as a late substitute in the game at Bradford City.
A wide left-sided player, he can play either as a winger or a wing back.
He made his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s against Holland in September 2000 and also featured as a substitute against Estonia the following month.
John was made available for transfer by Doncaster Rovers in November 2004 before joining Kidderminster Harriers in January 2005 with a contract to the end of the season.
His contract at Burton Albion was extended to June 2013 in May 2011.
