A tenacious midfielder, Johan also has the vision to open up the tightest defence. Having started his career with Anderlecht, he enjoyed an outstanding 1998/99 season in Serie A with Udinese and decided to move to Parma. Unfortunately he struggled to make any impression at his new club and returned to Udinese after a year. He was unable to win back a regular place and, after protracted negotiations, returned to Belgium with Standard Liege in the 2001 close season. A member of the Belgian international squad for over ten years, Johan is likely to line-up in the middle of midfield in Japan and South Korea alongside the veteran Marc Wilmots. He scored his only international goal against Morocco in 1999.
Johan scored with a superb free kick to open the scoring in Belgium's last Group H match against Russia as the Red Devils secured a 3-2 victory and qualification to the last 16.
