Spence was a hero of the barren inter-war period when United were a very poor side under a succession of poor managers. Through most of this period Spence was an undoubted star, a brilliant solo player who could score spectacular goals. His name was first on the team-sheet and lit up many a dismal Saturday. When things were going wrong, which was often, the crowd who loved Spence, cried as one man 'Give it to Spence!' A United legend whose 481 League appearances was a club record until Bill Foulkes bettered it during 1965-66.
