Payne was originally a half back but, whilst with Luton Town, was used as centre forward in a game against Bristol Rovers because of an injury crisis. He went on to score 10 goals in a 12-0 win. He also scored on his international debut for England. Sadly his career was disrupted by World War Two and later by injury (Whilst playing with West Ham and Milwall). In all, he managed 220 career goals in 250 club appearances including wartime games. He also played cricket for Bedfordshire and snooker to a high standard.
