Hours before he was due to make his Watford debut on the opening day of the 2003-04 season, Jimmy was tragically killed in a road traffic accident. With the Hornets home game against Coventry City postponed as a mark of respect, the tributes were led by his Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson: 'You could not meet a nicer and more bubbly character than Jimmy Davis. He was a player with real potential, that's why we sent him to Watford this season. At 21 he had great promise. We are all really sad.'
When United players collected their FA Cup winners' medals in 2004 they all wore shirts bearing Jimmy's squad number out of respect.
