Having developed through Notts County's youth system, Jim was loaned to Lincoln City in August 2000 as cover for regular 'keeper Alan Marriott.

He featured on the subs' bench and in reserve action for the Imps before abruptly returning to Meadow Lane following an injury crisis and replaced Darren Ward for the last ten minutes of the Worthington Cup Second Round second leg tie against Watford. He retained his place for the next two games before losing out to Paul Gibson and spent much of the remainder of the season out on loan firstly at Mansfield Town and then with Dr Martens League club Gresley Rovers.

He was one of several players released by the Magpies in the summer.
