Smith's story in 2000-01 would not have been out of place in a fairy-tale book.
Having started the campaign with Unibond League outfit Bishop Auckland and working as a postman, he took up the offer of trials with Bolton Wanderers.
Promptly giving up his day job to pursue his dream of a full-time career in football, he made some impressive appearances for the reserves before receiving his Football League debut in the final game of the regular season against Sheffield United.
Starting out on the left wing, he made some confident runs with the ball and acquitted himself very well, supplying several pinpoint crosses to boot.
Smith joined Preston North End in March 2004 with a contract to the end of the season before agreeing a one-year deal at Port Vale.
He joined Carlisle United in January 2007 with a contract to June 2009.
