A member of the Arsenal team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1999-2000, Jay joined Coventry City in the 2000 close season as a long-term prospect for the Sky Blues.
After making his senior debut in a Worthington Cup tie against Preston North End, he was given a tough baptism in the Premiership when he was chosen to lead the attack against Manchester United in November.
Although slightly overawed by the occasion, he was later recalled for the FA Cup tie at Manchester City when he performed well and subsequently made a number of short appearances as a substitute.
His efforts for England Under-18s were rewarded in May with an appearance for the Under-21s from the subs' bench in the friendly against Mexico when he scored with a spectacular overhead kick.
Jay joined Perugia in July 2003 in a three-year deal.
He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2006 with a three-year contract but was made available for transfer in May 2008.
Jay joined Cardiff City in August 2008 with a three-year contract.
He joined Queens Park Rangers in July 2011 with a three-year contract that was cancelled in June 2013.
